the Artist's Totem by Kir Talmage

the Artist's Totem
by Kir Talmage

Prompt: The Artist's Totem
prompted by: Jenny S., during Sketch Fest #28 (September, 2012)

(Another "oh my goodness I'm beginning to loathe the scanner" moment. But that aside...) I think of totems not just as animal spirit guides but also as doorways to abilities and muses (which is sort of what they are in an RPG my husband plays). My own experience in art is "ooh shiny wanna try that! Must work hard!" So magpies (who can do both) came to mind. So did crows of course, but that's ... used often, I guess. Drawn at the front desk of the Birds of Vermont Museum (between visitors), where we do not, in fact, have magpies. Or totem poles. Was trying to get the magpie to be bearing something glowing, which I might be able to do in paint but not so much in 5b pencil... So much to learn . This is why I love sketchfest: always shows me something I don't know how to do yet. Make me hungry for doing it!Not selling it only because I think I need it to work from....
