Self portrait in abstract by mikka

Self portrait in abstract

Prompt: The Young Artist
prompted by: Laura Macy, during Sketch Fest #21 (December, 2011)

At some point while I was in elementary school, I was asked to draw the members of my family, and came back with abstracts. The one of me sort of stuck as part of my self-image. This is rather rough. The clay I was working with was very soft, nice for fiddling with the overall shape but too soft to do any sort of detailing. Also, I should dig out the original drawing, which will take me a few hours of sorting through old papers. The base is wrong -- the original faded out at the bottom, and I'm not sure how it should stand. The outside should be obsidian, and the sphere should be something like a pearl or a soap bubble or a glass marble. I'm not quite sure where I'll go with this from here.

PeggyB says: Wohooo, No 300! Very interesting self-portrait! And intersting, too, that the concept stayed so long with you. ~ Reply?

mikka replied to this: A busy sketchfest is a good thing! I still have no idea where the idea/image came from, but it was either deep-rooted, or very sticky, or both.

Laura Macy says: I LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!!! I'm a huge fan of abstract and paint them, myself. I'm also starting to sculpt abstracts and am having loads of fun in this new endeavor. You should definitely continue developing this idea - I think it could really be stunning! How cool that you chose to work with clay as your medium for the prompt! Bravo!!! ~ Reply?

mikka replied to this: Thank you! It's hard to tell where the borders are between something meaningful and something random, in this space -- I'm not sure this makes much sense outside my head. Clay is my medium of choice at the moment -- I can't draw worth beans. :)

Lorna (Comtessa) says: This is wonderful! ~ Reply?

mikka replied to this: Thank you!

Deirdre / Wyld_Dandelyon says: This is cool. If you chilled the clay, would it get hard enough to work on the details? ~ Reply?

mikka replied to this: It will get harder as it dries. I just need to be patient and attentive to manage the moisture level. I couldn't have pulled the shape the way I did if I'd started with much drier clay.

Deirdre / Wyld_Dandelyon says: Oh, of course, this is natural clay! ~ Reply?
