Wu by Kir Talmage
Prompt: Panda witch
prompted by: mikka, during Sketch Fest #48 (March, 2014)
Faber-Castell colored pencil and graphite on smooth Piccadilly sketch pad paper. About 6inches x 8inches or so. I tried looking up Chinese witch but kept finding Disneyesque stuff (no), weird Euro interpretations from the 1800s (no) and finally came to Chinese shamans....
mikka says: Nifty! And one of the more serious panda drawings I've seen. I would not complain about a pointer to what you found on Chinese shaman, either, as I know ~nothing about them. ~ Reply?
replied to this: Thanks! I didn't find much, just poked at lots of "no that won't do" images on google search. Eventually I fiddled around at Wikipedia (where the glyph comes from) I supposed. Let's see if my history has anything... huh, not for images... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_%28shaman%29 I used and just found this : http://www.suppressedhistories.net/goddess/xiwangmu.html (which I might use in some daydreamed revision/big painting version someday) . Basically I just couldn't find a witch at all, which says something useful about perception and categorization of women of spirit/herb/magic, doesn't it? Plus googled panda photos (to get potential marking/proportions sorted). So let's see: I still know nothing, but I have some new paths to follow? Yeah, that's about it. :) Another interesting thing to read later: http://www.sourcememory.net/veleda/?p=104
