Sing a Song of Joy by mikka

Sing a Song of Joy
by mikka

Prompt: Sing a song of....
prompted by: Hope Bryant, during Sketch Fest #16 (July, 2011)

Style shamelessly copied from Girl Genius. The staves laid themselves out very neatly right off, and then the notes fought bitterly against every notion I had of how to place them. It could happily sprawl a few more inches to the right but I didn't leave myself enough paper.

Jen Lee says: that's very cool! ~ Reply?

Michelle Goldberg replied to this: Thank you! I have a lot fun fooling around with this lettering style.

Hope Bryant says: That's very pretty. I could see that broken up and made into Photoshop brushes. :) It's very nicely stylized! ~ Reply?

Michelle Goldberg replied to this: Thank you! The stylization is cribbed from Kaja Folio's heterodyne glyphs in Girl Genius (at least, I think from external context that those glyphs are her work rather than Phil's) -- has a nice "happy" example of them in the comic. My copycatting is sort of rounded off, as there are aspects of her style I can't can't catch at all (and a few things I deliberately do differently to please my sense of consistency). That said ... I know zilch about photoshop, and have vaguely been meaning to learn at least some basic editing. Are there tutorials or references you'd suggest for a novice?

Alisha Christian says: Wonderful! Joyful! Love it! ~ Reply?

Michelle Goldberg replied to this: Thank you! It's a lot of fun to poke at what makes something abstract expressive. :)

Ellen Million says: Joy! This is very eye-pleasing. ~ Reply?

Michelle Goldberg replied to this: Yay, thank you! I'm thinking this might work on a cup, once I've whittled my queue down to size.

Sunni Smith says: That's really neat. Love the composition. Lovely work. :) ~ Reply?

Michelle Goldberg replied to this: Thank you! I am torn on whether this style would turn out better if I had a bit more clue about real musical notation, or if that would give me too many constraints to work with. :)

Hope Bryant says: Photoshop Tutorials: Yes plenty of them and they show up on Google search fairly quickly. The making of the brushes is pretty simple (like two or three clicks of a mouse), it's the design before that takes the most time. ;) ~ Reply?

Michelle Goldberg replied to this: Not that I have any idea as yet what I'd *do* with a photoshop brush. :) I'll see what the 'net throws at me.

Sue Rundle-Hughes says: Great idea :) Lovely ~ Reply?

Michelle Goldberg replied to this: Thank you! It's a fun style.
